Garden Duties for Volunteers
Week of June 27th
- Weed between the rows of beans. This can be done by hoeing (Or a tiller). It doesn’t have to done by hand
- Weed around the tomato plants where needed
- Water as needed
- To determine if a plant needs water, please feel the soil around the plant. If it is moist, water isn’t needed.
- Often plants that are wilted actually are overwatered and have root rot
- If a plant is wilted 1st thing in the morning before the sun hits it, it probably is over watered or perhaps has a borer in the stem.
- The hot sun will wilt leaves as it draws water from them.
- Please water 1st thing in the morning or late in the day. If watering late, please keep the water off of the foliage.
- The best way to water is to take the nozzle off of the hose and apply the stream of water to the base of the plant and its roots.
- The tomato plants may need to tied off again. String is hanging on a tomato stake near the front of the garden. There is also a very large spool of twine in the plastic picking tub that you can cut from.
- The tomatoes with the short stakes need to have a longer stake placed. I have left stakes on the garden site.
- The 2 rows of climbing beans need to have 2 or 3 more stakes inserted in the row.
- The climbing beans need to have additional rows of string strung. The beans would like some vertical strings to be tied off and hung down from the horizontal ones.
- Please place any produce picked from the garden in the church kitchen. I will pick it up 1st thing in the morning on Tuesday and again on Friday. It does NOT need to be in the fridge.
Thank you for your help
